RED Technologies acquires Nominet’s spectrum management assets

Today, RED Technologies announced a deal with Nominet that will see the company acquire Nominet’s suite of spectrum management assets.

Under the terms of the deal, the databases developed by Nominet to support adoption of TV White Space internationally – known as WaveDB Connect – and Wave DB Explore, Nominet’s spectrum planning tool – will be acquired and run by RED Technologies. RED will also acquire the assets for the DSA (Dynamic Spectrum Alliance) TV White Space (TVWS) database.

The regulatory authorities in the US and UK have approved the transition of the TV White Space licenses from Nominet to RED Technologies.  Users of any of Nominet’s spectrum management services will now be supported by RED with no loss of service during the transition.

Adam Leach, CIO at Nominet said: “We are immensely proud of the work we have done in TVWS sector over the years, but we’ve made a strategic decision to focus on our registry and cyber security businesses. We know RED Technologies are uniquely placed to take WaveDB forward, not least because they are experts in spectrum management with experience in the LSA (Licensed Shared Access) and CBRS (Citizens Broadband Radio Service) market, but they have the drive and ambition to give TWVS the place it deserves within dynamic spectrum management and in the wider connectivity market.”

Michael Abitbol, Managing Director at RED Technologies comments: “We’ve been aware of Nominet’s work and impressive track record in TVWS for some time and we are really excited about being able to enter this part of the spectrum market with WaveDB.  TVWS has great potential for development, with dedicated resource and focus, and we are keen to build on the foundations that Nominet has laid to provide broadband in places that are often ignored.

“Given the pandemic we find ourselves in, the need for connectivity in rural spots and hard to reach places and communities, no matter how small they are, is more vital than ever.  That’s the potential for TVWS, and the people it can help, and we are keen to get started on building more use cases to make a reality for the many, not just the few.”
